The Library

There are two halves to this. The first is a reading list gathered by thread, of books that are worth the hours they will take from you. The second is a collection of policies, guidance and real examples of services that have changed something, for the days when you need to put a document in front of somebody rather than make the case on your own.

Authority and Friendship

Cover of Radical Candor

Kim Scott (2017)

The whole idea is to care personally and challenge directly at the same time, which is written almost exactly for the bind you find yourself in when you have to supervise your friends.

Cover of Boundaries for Leaders: Results, Relationships, and Being Ridiculously in Charge

Henry Cloud (2013)

This is about what a leader is genuinely responsible for setting, and just as importantly about what is not yours to carry no matter how willing you might be to pick it up.

Cover of Friend and Foe: When to Cooperate, When to Compete

Adam Galinsky; Maurice Schweitzer (2015)

This is about cooperating and competing with the same people at the same time, which describes most of public service and almost never gets named as a skill.
